Borno South Senator Ali Ndume has expressed dissatisfaction with the All Progressives Congress (APC) and hinted at leaving the ruling party over his disagreement with President Bola Tinubu’s proposed tax reform bills.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television, Ndume disclosed that he remained in the party only because of his closeness to Tinubu and his desire to see the president succeed.

“I told you I am very close to Tinubu. I don’t want him to fail and that is why I am taking some of these insults. If not, look, I can leave the party. The party has even given me an offer that I can go if I want,” he said.

Grievances Against Tax Reform

Ndume criticized the proposed tax reform bills, describing them as counterproductive. He argued that the reforms, which aim to exempt those earning below ₦800,000 from Value Added Tax (VAT), would ultimately burden consumers due to increased costs passed on by companies required to pay higher taxes.

“Corporate taxes going up means companies like Dangote Industries will raise the prices of goods and services. This will only hurt consumers, especially those already struggling,” he noted.

The senator added that the government appeared to be in a rush to pass the bills without thorough legislative scrutiny. “Why the hurry? There is a big suspicion,” Ndume remarked.

Ndume’s Strained Relationship with APC

Ndume’s relationship with the APC leadership has been contentious. In July, he was removed as Senate Chief Whip after criticizing the Tinubu administration in an interview. Following his removal, the party advised him to resign if he wished, rather than publicly criticize its administration.

Although Ndume later apologized and pledged to refrain from further criticism, his stance on the tax reform bills has reignited tensions.

The Tax Reform Bills

The four tax reform bills under consideration include the Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Bill and the Nigeria Tax Administration Bill, among others. Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, who sponsored the bills, stated that they aim to simplify Nigeria’s tax system, reduce double taxation, and incentivize private sector investments.

While proponents hail the bills as a step toward economic stability, critics like Ndume argue that they fail to address the realities of ordinary Nigerians.

The Senate has referred the bills to a committee for a six-week review. The outcome of this process may further influence Ndume’s position within the APC.
