The Prime Minister of the Biafra Republic Government in Exile, Simon Ekpa, has announced that the self-proclaimed Biafra government will uphold all United Nations Human Rights Treaties during its upcoming Biafra Declaration Convention.
Ekpa made this statement during a virtual meeting on X (formerly Twitter) yesterday, emphasizing that the commitment to these treaties is crucial in highlighting the ongoing marginalization faced by the people of Biafra under the Nigerian government, particularly in the Southeast region.
Ekpa pointed out the historical struggles of the Biafrans, noting they have faced continuous persecution since 1967. He argued that the Nigerian government’s treatment of the Igbos in the Southeast justifies the call for self-determination and independence.
“Biafra will endorse all United Nations Human Rights Treaties at the Convention,” Ekpa declared. “Our push for Biafra’s independence stems from the ongoing marginalization by the Nigerian government,” he added.
Ekpa also revealed plans for a Biafra Declaration event scheduled to take place from November 28 to December 2024.
The agitation for Biafra has seen renewed momentum since the detention of Nnamdi Kanu by the Nigerian government in 2021. Several Southeast governors, regional groups, and the Labour Party’s Presidential Candidate in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, have actively called for Kanu’s release as a measure to restore peace in the Southeast.
In addition, Southeast Senators recently held discussions with the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, seeking Kanu’s release. Following the meeting, the lawmakers agreed to make a formal appeal to President Bola Tinubu, urging him to grant Kanu freedom.
