Speaking at the first quarterly meeting of the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council (NIREC) in Abuja, the Sultan highlighted the severe impact of poverty and hunger, noting that these issues have driven some individuals to commit crimes, including murder, for as little as N500. He appealed to all levels of government to take immediate action to improve living standards.
The Sultan, who co-chairs NIREC, also addressed the persistent issue of corruption in Nigeria, stating that despite constant discussions at various public and private forums, corruption remains deeply entrenched.

He suggested that research be conducted to understand why it is so challenging to eradicate corruption in the country.
He lamented the tendency of politicians to enrich themselves at the expense of the public, noting that some officeholders amass wealth rapidly and beyond scrutiny, often becoming richer than the states they govern. This unchecked exploitation of public resources, he warned, perpetuates a cycle of corruption and mismanagement.

“We are living in very difficult and challenging times in this country, and nobody should think or say otherwise,” the Sultan stated. He emphasized that acknowledging these problems is a crucial first step towards finding solutions.
