The Supreme Court has ruled an appeal challenging the emergence of Umar Namadi as the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Jigawa State for the forthcoming general elections.
Namadi is the deputy governor of Jigawa State.
Farouk Aliyu, a former member of the House of Representatives, challenged the APC primary election held on May 26 that produced Namadi as the party’s candidate for governor in the March 11 election.

A five-member panel of the Supreme Court, delivering a decision prepared by Justice Kekere-Ekun and read by Justice Ibrahim Saulawa, ruled that Aliyu’s appeal lacked merit and that he had failed to prove the declaratory reliefs he sought.
Aliyu’s appeal challenged the 4 November 2022 decision of the Kano Court of Appeal, which dismissed his previous appeal.
The appellate court in Kano upheld Namadi’s nomination as the APC’s candidate for governor in Jigawa State in the 11 March election.
Aliyu’s appeal against the 13 September 2022 ruling by Hassan Dikko of the Federal High Court in Dutse, Jigawa State, was unanimously rejected as meritless by a three-member panel of the Court of Appeal led by Ita Mbaba in a verdict issued on November 4th.

Aliyu lacked the legal standing to sue the gubernatorial candidate, the trial court judge ruled, and he was unable to present credible evidence to support his claim.
In the meantime, Namadi contested a portion of the Court of Appeal’s decision reversing the trial court’s ruling that Mr. Aliyu lacked the legal standing to file the suit, which did not qualify as a pre-election case.
