Former presidential aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Abdul-Jhalil Tafawa-Balewa, has called on Nigerians to show patience with President Bola Tinubu, noting that he inherited a nearly bankrupt nation from Muhammadu Buhari’ APC government and is working to restore it.

Tafawa-Balewa, speaking to journalists on Sunday in Lagos, said the challenge of reviving a country on the verge of collapse is monumental.

While acknowledging Tinubu’s efforts to guide Nigeria toward recovery, he urged the president to take more decisive actions to address the nation’s critical issues. Tafawa-Balewa stressed the importance of reducing the cost of governance, suggesting that cutting unnecessary expenses is essential to freeing up resources for national development.

He advised Tinubu to bolster his administration by appointing skilled technocrats who can effectively implement development policies. Additionally, he pointed out the need to reduce the number of ministries, which currently stands at 48, arguing that streamlining would help cut down on excessive government spending.

“The President needs to adapt to modern times and bring in people with up-to-date knowledge and skills to manage the ministries,” Tafawa-Balewa said. “We have too many ministries, about 48, that need to be slimmed down because running them costs too much.”

On security, Tafawa-Balewa highlighted its importance in boosting agricultural productivity, stating that threats like kidnappings and insurgencies are stifling Nigeria’s food production. He emphasized the role of technology in food preservation and distribution, urging the government to prioritize security to ensure a stable environment for economic growth.
