The Minister of Sports, Sunday Dare, stated that illegal occupants of Surulere’s National Stadium threatened to kill him if the government effects the 2020 demolition exercise.
Dare told journalists during a recent inspection of the 45,000-seat stadium that the ministry launched an effort to restore the national monument to its original condition after it was abandoned by previous governments, but was met with opposition from illegal inhabitants.

“When I walked in, I encountered an abandoned place. Hundreds of people were partying, and there were more than 108 illegal stores. There was a market there.

“We had the courage to organise a task force. We gave every occupant the opportunity to present legal proof of their presence,” Dare explained.

He continued, “This is due to the fact that we made a promise to restore this location to its original architectural design, so we could see what was here. Restoring it to its original architectural design differs from repairing it.
