Adeleke, Oyetola’s suit: Appeal Court decides today

As the Court of Appeal in Abuja renders judgement today to determine the winner of the July 16 governorship election in Osun State, the Osun State chapters of the Peoples Democratic Party and the All Progressives Congress have expressed hope for victory.

Additionally, the Osun State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps reported that it had sent personnel to the state’s crucial infrastructure in advance of the ruling.

As the winner of the election, Senator Ademola Adeleke of the PDP was declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

Adeleke defeated APC candidate and then-incumbent Governor Adegboyega Oyetola with 403,371 votes, according to INEC.

Oyetola and the APC, however, rejected the election’s outcome and went to court.

In its majority decision on January 27, 2023, the tribunal, presided over by Justice Tertse Kume, declared Oyetola the winner of the election and revoked Adeleke’s victory.

Adeleke was declared the poll’s winner by Justice B. Ogbuli in a minority decision.

On March 13, the Court of Appeal heard the appeal, but did not render a decision.

The Court of Appeal had informed the parties that the judgement would be delivered today, according to Mr. Muhydeen Adeoye, a member of the legal team for Oyetola and the APC, who spoke with our correspondent on Thursday.

Oladele Olabamiji, the director of media for the Osun PDP, discussed the party’s expectations and stated that they were confident the Court of Appeal would uphold Adeleke’s victory.

He said, “We are expecting justice for the electorate in Osun, who collectively voted for the state governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke. According to the strength of the evidence that was presented to the court, we anticipate justice.

The Osun APC’s spokesperson, Mr. Kola Olabisi, also expressed confidence that the party would perform admirably.

“We are optimistic that we are going to come out in flying colours because of our iron-cast evidence before the court,” Olabisi said.

In the meantime, Kehinde Adeleke, the command’s acting public relations officer, said in a statement: “There is strategic deployment of personnel around critical infrastructure in the state ahead of Friday’s Appeal Court judgement on the matter between Governor Ademola Adeleke and Alhaji Adegboyega Oyetola.

“An armed detachment of the corps will also be on patrol in preparation for emergency response. The command is prepared to quell any unrest brought on by potential protests from resentful parties.
