Tinubu Approves Commencement of Academic Activities in Six New Universities.

In a recent development, President Bola Tinubu has granted approval for the commencement of academic activities at six out of the 14 newly established universities, which were established during the last days of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman, following a closed-door meeting with President Tinubu at the State House in Abuja on Wednesday.

According to Prof. Mamman, there are over a dozen of these institutions, and starting all of them simultaneously places a heavy financial burden on the government due to the capital-intensive nature of tertiary institutions.

However, President Tinubu’s administration has strategically aligned these institutions with key mandates and priorities. They are specialized institutions in areas such as agriculture, education, and medicine, which are crucial to addressing the nation’s needs.

As a result, the decision was made to stagger their implementation to manage financial constraints. The initial phase will see the launch of six universities, with two dedicated to agriculture, two for colleges of education, and two focused on medicine.

Some of the universities established during this period include the David Nweze Umahi Federal University of Medical Sciences in Uburu, the Federal University of Transport in Daura, Katsina, the Shehu Shagari University of Education in Sokoto, and the Admiralty University in Ibusa, Delta State.

In addition, President Tinubu approved the completion of the National Library, a national monument, with a projected timeline of 21 months for its completion. This move aligns with the government’s efforts to improve access to educational and research resources.

The decision to stagger the universities’ launch is aimed at effectively addressing the financial requirements and priorities of the government, particularly in areas critical to national development
