Tinubu Never Built Lagos, His Govt Doing Everything Wrong.

A former governor of Jigawa State, Sule Lamido, has dismissed the notion that President Bola Tinubu is the architect of modern Lagos, criticising his federal administration for failing to address key issues effectively.

Tinubu, who governed Nigeria’s economic capital from 1999 to 2007, is often credited by his supporters with laying the foundation for a modern Lagos State. However, Lamido, a prominent member of the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), challenged this view during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today.

“I know him when he was under SDP; when he was the secretary of the party. I also knew him as governor of Lagos State. I know him very well and I know his capacity, I know what he can do; I know what he cannot do. Luckily today, he is there on top of the country.

He never built Lagos,” Lamido said. “Lagos was built with Nigerian money — I mean the port, the airport, the bridges. So, when you say Tinubu built Lagos; he never built Lagos.

Lamido argued that Lagos, as the former capital of Nigeria before the move to Abuja, benefited significantly from Federal Government investments, thus undermining the claim that Tinubu solely developed the state.

**‘Govt Doing Almost Everything Wrong’**

Since assuming the presidency in May 2023, Tinubu’s administration has introduced numerous reforms, including the removal of the fuel subsidy and the floating of the naira. These changes have, however, resulted in a tripling of petrol costs, a surge in living expenses, and inflation rates hitting a record high of 33.6 per cent in April 2024.

Despite the administration’s calls for patience and assurances that the policies will eventually benefit the country, Lamido rated the government’s performance poorly. “The government is doing almost everything wrong,” he remarked, criticising projects like the Lagos-Calabar coastal road amidst ongoing demands for a new minimum wage by organised labour.

According to Lamido, with prudent management of resources, Nigeria has the financial capability to meet the new minimum wage demands. “There is money in Nigeria. If they do it [Lagos-Calabar coastal road], they can pay any minimum wage,” the former governor insisted.
