Tinubu Led FG is set To Meet NLC Today Over Fuel Subsidy Removal

Representatives of the Federal Government are scheduled to meet with the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) today at 2:00 p.m. to discuss the planned removal of fuel subsidies.

“Government appears to be interested in dialogue. As of last night, they reached out, and we’ve scheduled a discussion to begin at 2:00 p.m. today,” NLC National President Joe Ajaero said on Wednesday’s Sunrise Daily programme on Channels Television.

“There, all other issues will be discussed, because you cannot simply say there is no subsidy, cease production, and leave us to the whims of the market, to those who wish to sell a product they purchased for N10 for N100 in order to maximise profit. If there is no more garri, we must find another source of nourishment.”

Even if President Bola Tinubu has a good intention, he must provide alternatives, according to Labour’s position, which has been made clear.

He stated that the President should have inquired about the effects of the removal of fuel subsidies on the Nigerian populace.

Among the alternatives listed by the NLC chief were the repair of the nation’s four refineries and the provision of transportation alternatives for Nigerian workers.

Ajaero called for a review of the President’s proclamation, stating, “The proclamation is as good as law, and if in the process we make a law that is not practical, the same people who made the law can review the proclamation.”

“Does it bring us pleasure to announce that the subsidy has been eliminated and people will begin to suffer? “Is it not part of leadership to consider ways to alleviate the suffering of the people?” He queried.

Meanwhile, the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) has stated that the only way to make Nigeria great is to deregulate the oil sector and eliminate subsidies.

“The only way to make Nigeria great is to eliminate subsidies,” IPMAN National Public Relations Officer Yakubu Suleiman said on Wednesday’s Sunrise Daily programme on Channels Television.

On Monday, during his inaugural address at the Eagle Square in Abuja, Tinubu stated that the era of fuel subsidy payments has ended, adding that neither the 2023 budget nor the justification for subsidy payments exist.

“The fuel subsidy has been eliminated,” Tinubu declared, noting that his government would instead invest in infrastructure and other areas to bolster the economy.

Since then, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has supported Tinubu’s proposal to eliminate fuel subsidies.

However, the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) stated that the President cannot unilaterally decide to remove subsidies, stating that there was a reason why the previous administration of Muhammadu Buhari deferred the “sensitive issue” to the new government.

Since the president’s announcement, fuel lines have reappeared across the nation as Nigerians seek out the premium product, which is now sold for N300/litre and above.
