Tinubu’s Govt Spends N15 Billion on Aircraft Maintenance, Fueling in 6 Months Amidst Economic Hardship
The administration of President Bola Tinubu has reportedly spent N15.9 billion on aircraft maintenance and fueling within the first six months of 2024, a figure that has sparked significant controversy given Nigeria’s current economic struggles.
This expenditure comes at a time when many Nigerians are calling for a reduction in the cost of governance to alleviate widespread financial hardship.

A breakdown of the figures from the Nigerian government’s Open Treasury Portal reveals that N9 billion was allocated for the maintenance of aircraft, while an additional N6.9 billion was spent on fueling.

The significant spending has raised eyebrows, especially as the country battles a severe economic downturn and mounting national debt.
The debate over the cost of maintaining the Presidential Air Fleet is not new, with reports suggesting that Nigeria spends approximately $1 billion annually on these expenses.
The recent purchase of a new aircraft, reportedly costing around N150 billion, has only added fuel to the fire, drawing criticism for what many see as excessive and unnecessary spending during a time of economic austerity.
Critics argue that the frequent travels of Nigerian presidents and other high-ranking officials further exacerbate the cost of maintaining and fueling the aircraft, leading to heightened calls for more prudent management of public resources.
The ongoing economic challenges, characterized by rising debt levels and difficulties in funding the national budget, have intensified demands for the government to curtail its spending, particularly on items perceived as luxuries.
