Tobi Amusan, the last hope of Nigeria with respect to winning a medal at the Paris Olympic Games, is out of the tournament. The 27-year-old sprinter finished third at the semifinals of the women’s 100m hurdles, thereby bringing an end to her Olympic journey.
The first heat saw reigning world champion and world record holder, Amusan, run from lane six. She was outpaced by the United States’ Alayasha Johnson, who returned a time of 12.39 seconds, and Devynne Charlton of the Bahamas with a time of 12.50 seconds. Her time of 12.55 seconds was not enough to get her into the final round.
The loss comes against the backdrop of a very poor performance by Nigerian athletes at the Paris Olympics, who have not won any medals and are just days to the end on Sunday.
It was earlier in the week that former Super Eagles Coach Adegboye Onigbinde faulted Nigeria’s outing at the Olympics, attributing the poor results to the country’s sports administration. “The reason Nigerian athletes are performing below expectations at the ongoing Olympics and other international meets is not technical but administrative,” said Onigbinde.
He zeroed in further that the problem is mixing politics with sports, which has overshadowed core objectives of developmental programs that brought past successes to the nation.
As the Olympics come to an end, Nigeria’s hunt for a medal becomes a case of nowhere-to-go, and the nation comes back home to think about its sports administration.
