Two Police Officers Killed, Three Unconscious as Shiites Clash with Police in Abuja

Two police officers were killed and three others left unconscious following a violent confrontation with members of the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), commonly known as the Shiites, in the Wuse area of Abuja on Sunday, August 25, 2024.

 

The clash occurred when the IMN members allegedly launched an unprovoked attack on police operatives stationed at a checkpoint near a traffic light at Wuse Junction. The assailants, wielding machetes, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), and knives, reportedly destroyed three police patrol vehicles during the altercation.

Josephine Adeh, the spokesperson for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command, confirmed the incident, describing it as an unprovoked attack on the police personnel.

 

The FCT police command wishes to confirm an unprovoked attack by the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria, popularly known as the ‘Shi’ite’ group, on some personnel of the Nigeria Police Force attached to FCT command at Wuse Junction by the traffic light, where two (2) police personnel were killed, three left unconscious in the hospital, and three (3) police patrol vehicles set ablaze,” she stated.

In response to the attack, FCT Police Commissioner Benneth Igweh condemned the actions of the IMN members and vowed to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice. The police have since made several arrests, and the situation in the area has been brought under control, with normalcy restored.

 

“The Commissioner of Police FCT, CP Benneth C. Igweh, condemns the unprovoked attack on police officers and promises to bring those involved to book. The situation is presently under control and normalcy restored,” Adeh added.
