Two PDP senators resign from party, give reasons

Mathew Urhoghide (Edo) and Ayo Akinyelure (Ondo), two serving senators of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), have resigned from the party.

Their resignations are contained in separate letters that were read in open session on Wednesday by the Vice President of the Senate, Ovie Omo-Agege.

In his letter, Urhoghide stated, “I am formally informing you and the entire senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria that I am immediately resigning from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

“This difficult decision was precipitated by the negative political energy emanating from the irreconcilable differences and squabbles within the PDP at the national level and in my home state of Edo State in particular.

“These squabbles have reached levels that make it impossible for someone like me, a confirmed democrat, to function and advance in my political career as I had planned.

“However, I am grateful to the party that provided me with the opportunity to serve my country for two terms as a senator, thereby allowing me to meet and collaborate with all of you wonderful colleagues.

“The opportunity contributed to the formation of significant and lasting friendships in the Senate. It provided me with knowledge and experience that I could not have obtained elsewhere.”

Akinyelure stated in his letter that his resignation from the PDP will take effect on June 11.

He stated, “This is to inform you and all my distinguished colleagues in the ninth Senate of the National Assembly of my resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party, effective June 11, 2023.

“Therefore, I would like to thank the party for granting me the opportunity to represent the Ondo Central Senatorial District and Nigeria in the Senate of the 9th Assembly under the banner of the PDP. This decision was made now because the ninth Senate will be concluding soon.”

He declared that his resignation would allow him to settle down and pursue other human and professional endeavours in which he could be of service to Ondo State and Nigeria in general.
