Despite Democratic worries about his age, Biden has not faced any significant challenge, even as the Republican field widens.
Democrats prefer a different candidate than Biden, according to polling, but there is no agreement on who that candidate should be.
According to a Sunday poll by NBC News, 51% of Democrats and 70% of Americans think Biden shouldn’t run for re-election. The majority of voters who oppose Biden’s candidature cite his age as a “major” deterrent.
With the official launches of Trump and former UN Secretary Nikki Haley’s campaigns, the Republican field is already beginning to take shape. Ron DeSantis of Florida and Tim Scott of South Carolina are starting the process of registering to run.
Trump received 46% of the vote in the NBC News survey, compared to 31% for DeSantis and 6% for former Vice President Mike Pence, who was the second-most popular Republican candidate. Scott and Haley both scored 3%.
At 76 years old, Trump is also questioned about his age.
Early polling indicates a competitive general election. In a head-to-head comparison, a Wall Street Journal survey from mid-April showed Biden leading Trump by 3 percentage points, 48% to 45%. According to the same poll, DeSantis and Biden have a 48% to 45% advantage.
