Peter Obi Praises Tinubu for Keeping Campaign Promises.

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has delivered a sharp critique of President Bola Tinubu’s first year in office. Speaking on Arise News’ “Prime Time,” hosted by Charles Aniagolu, Obi asserted that Tinubu has indeed fulfilled his campaign promises, albeit to the detriment of Nigeria’s economy.

When asked by Aniagolu to assess Tinubu’s performance, Obi did not hold back. “I think he has kept to his campaign promises to continue from where Buhari stopped. He has driven up food inflation, energy prices, and in just nine months, Tinubu has increased Nigeria’s debts to ₦16 trillion.”

Obi detailed the economic downturn under Tinubu’s administration:

  • Exchange rate: Previously ₦450 to the dollar, now ₦1480.
  • Bag of rice: Increased from ₦35,000 to ₦80,000.
  • Fuel price: Jumped from ₦190 to ₦780.
  • Beans: Rose from ₦30,000 to ₦85,000.
  • Bread: Climbed from ₦350 to ₦1500.

“Tinubu has destroyed the Nigerian economy, far below other African countries we were better than,” Obi concluded, emphasizing the severe economic impact felt by Nigerians.

This statements highlight significant economic challenges, with skyrocketing prices and a weakened currency under Tinubu’s leadership. Obi’s remarks underscore the critical need for effective economic policies to reverse these trends and restore stability

Obi’s comments reflect the frustration and hardship experienced by many Nigerians. The sharp rise in food and energy prices, coupled with a significant increase in national debt, paints a bleak picture of the country’s economic health.

The exchange rate depreciation has further exacerbated inflation, making imports more expensive and reducing the purchasing power of ordinary citizens.
