The results of the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) have revealed that over 500,000 Nigerian students failed to pass English Language and Mathematics, sparking concerns over the quality of education in the country.

According to Amos Dangut, the Head of WAEC’s Nigeria Office, 503,275 out of the 1.8 million candidates who sat for the exams did not secure a passing grade in these core subjects.

This troubling trend indicates a decline in performance compared to previous years. Dangut noted that only 1,301,941 candidates, or 72.12%, obtained credits in at least five subjects, including English and Mathematics—a 7.69% drop from the 79.81% recorded in 2023.

Of those who passed, 628,820 were male, while 673,121 were female, representing 48.30% and 51.70% of successful candidates, respectively.

The poor performance in these critical subjects has raised alarms about the preparedness of students for higher education and the effectiveness of the current educational system. Dangut’s analysis further showed that 1,332,089 candidates, or 73.79%, received credits in any five subjects, whether or not they included English and Mathematics.

In addition to the failures, WAEC withheld the results of 215,267 candidates, accounting for 11.92% of the total, due to various cases of examination malpractice. The examination body announced the release of the 2024 results via its official X handle, urging all candidates to visit the WAEC website to check their results.
