Delta: We won’t contest election again unless we have N10bn – Ogboru

Chief Great Ovedje Ogboru, the All Progressives Grand Alliance’s (APGA) candidate for governor in Delta state, has voiced disappointment in Nigeria’s electioneering, claiming that it is getting worse every year.

In a special interview with Ejes Gist News Nigeria, Ogboru revealed that one of his kids had advised him not to run for office until he earned N10 billion.

In case you forgot, the APGA represented the opposition in the state prior to the 2023 elections.

He fought the Peoples Democratic Party,  PDP, fiercely in the elections of 2007, 2010, and 2011, all while running as a member of the Democratic Peoples Party, or DPP. He generated some State House of Assembly members in those elections.

Ogboru said the following about the 2023 governorship election: “After the election was finished, we had to congratulate the victor, Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori.

“Having stated that, I want to add that the Nigerian electoral process is getting worse every year, and this should not be the case.

“Based on what we have seen, it will be safe to say that no one will ever again be able to win an election without having a very large bank account. In fact, one of my kids texted me after those elections to say, “Daddy, we won’t run for office again unless we have N10 billion.”

“If I had to extrapolate, I want to argue that today’s youth have confined themselves; we find it rather unsettling and inconceivable that people may voluntarily sell their birth rights by selling their votes.

By doing this, people become into contemporary slaves and lose their ability to challenge the actions of the government; this is pitiable, sad, and intolerable, and the future ought to steer clear of it.
