Xabi Alonso, manager of Bayer Leverkusen, explained that Victor Boniface has seen reduced playing time since his injury due to the club’s “wide squad.” Alonso made these remarks during a press conference ahead of the Europa League final between Leverkusen and Atlanta on Wednesday.

Boniface, a key player for Leverkusen, suffered a groin injury in January while preparing for the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) with the Super Eagles. This injury sidelined him for three months. Since his return in April, the 23-year-old forward has only started three games for the Bundesliga champions.

Alonso addressed the Nigerian’s reduced role, stating that the team is “helping him to be back on track” post-injury. He emphasized his satisfaction with Boniface’s contributions, noting, “After the injury, it takes time. But we have a wide squad with so many players, and they all want to be on the pitch. I like it when someone is not playing, and he shows the character to prove me wrong as a coach. That is the challenge and the professional thing.”

The manager expressed his contentment with Boniface, saying, “I am happy with Boni. His impact this season has helped us so much. We are helping him, too, get back on track. Tell people from Nigeria that we are happy with him.”

Despite his limited minutes, Boniface was named the best rookie in Germany’s Bundesliga for the 2023/24 season on May 15, continuing to excel when given the opportunity.

Leverkusen recently made history by becoming the first team to complete a Bundesliga season without a defeat. They remain unbeaten in all competitions and are poised to compete for their second trophy of the season against Atlanta.

Ademola Lookman, another Super Eagles winger, is expected to feature in the final for the Italian side.
