President Tinubu’s decision to appoint Nyesom Wike as the minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has faced criticism from Chief Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, an All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain in Rivers State.
In a statement, Eze expressed dissatisfaction with Wike’s leadership, particularly highlighting the demolition of structures in the FCT under his administration.

Eze lamented the timing of the demolition, citing the challenging economic conditions that citizens were already grappling with.
He argued that instead of focusing on economic development strategies to uplift the living standards of FCT residents, Wike opted for an autocratic approach.
The APC chieftain emphasized the importance of democratic principles in governance, asserting that responsible societies prioritize democratic endeavors over authoritarian tendencies.

Eze criticized what he perceived as an abuse of power by Wike, accusing him of using his position to oppress defenseless citizens and political adversaries under the guise of reformation.
Assigning blame to President Tinubu, Eze accused him of overlooking Wike’s past actions and appointing him as minister despite public opposition.
He raised concerns about the potential consequences of such appointments, including dishonesty, non-performance, and abuse of office.

He said: “A preference for democratic endeavour over authoritarian caprice is a fundamental attribute of any responsible society or government that wishes to impact its populace through policies and programmes.”
“Demolition spree targeted at innocent citizens in the FCT at a moment when the value of the naira has remained on a free fall, and the economy, on a steady downward trend with resultant hardship on the citizenry smacks of sheer authoritarianism laced with deliberate wickedness for the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike to deploy the powers of his office to oppress the defenceless and perceived political adversaries in the guise of reformation.”

Eze underscored the significance of character in selecting individuals for public offices, contrasting the situation in Nigeria with more well mannered societies where character holds greater weight in such appointments.
He concluded by highlighting the need for a shift in approach to ensure responsible governance and alleviate the challenges faced by the Nigerian populace.
