CBN Governor’s Crime Was More Than Electoral Fraud – Wole Soyinka slams Emefiele
Prof. Wole Soyinka, a renowned Nigerian Nobel laureate, has criticised the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele.
He criticised Emefiele for the naira redesign policy and the recent naira notes crisis that threw the entire nation’s economy into disarray.
In an interview with Channels Television on Monday, Soyinka stated that Emefiele’s crime was against humanity and even worse than electoral fraud.
Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka stated, “Emefiele has committed a crime against humanity that exceeds any electoral manipulation.”

“He struck at the core of the subsisting survival principles, minimal needs, and entitlements of street people.”
Soyinka believes that President Muhammadu Buhari permitted Emefiele to allow Nigerians to suffer.
“Do not harass me. Don’t silence my voice. Don’t take away my economic potential or my economic rights. “Do not abandon me to the mercy of sadists like Emefiele,” he pleaded.
“He and his boss, Buhari, are ultimately responsible for allowing this to occur, as it was ultimately his decision to allow it to occur. He [Emefiele] is the expert, however, he is the one who provides advice and carries out the policies.”
Soyinka alleged that the CBN governor had brought the nation to a state of despair.
Recounting his own experience, the activist stated, “As recently as a few days ago, when I texted the bank and received a returned check, they had no cash.

“Eventually, one of the bankers brought me something from his own stash and explained to me what had been happening, how they had been waiting for money to arrive.

On March 22 that Emefiele admitted that Nigerians had difficulty conducting online banking transactions as a result of the flood of online transactions that hit Nigeria’s banking industry during the cash crunch.
The CBN governor who apologised for the online transaction failures stated that the apex bank would maintain the current monetary tightening regime as a result of the continued rise in headline inflation, which has posed significant economic risks for Nigeria.
He had said, “I must apologise. Yes, online channels fail. The banking industry has been hit by a deluge of online transactions, without question. However, it’s being resolved.
“Every day, our Payment System Management Department monitors the online payment platforms to ensure that any outages are quickly remedied so that business can continue without interruption.”
