A somber atmosphere enveloped the city of Zaria on Friday evening as tragedy struck the Zaria Central Mosque, claiming the lives of four individuals. The heart-wrenching incident unfolded during the Asr (evening) prayer at approximately 4pm, leaving the community in shock and mourning.

 

The victims, who had gathered to observe their religious obligations, were caught unaware as the mosque’s structure suddenly collapsed. Despite the immediate efforts to rescue those trapped under the debris, four lives were tragically lost. The incident has cast a pall of grief over the local community and beyond.

Mallam Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli, the Emir of Zazzau, officially confirmed the unfortunate event. In light of the calamity, he declared that future prayers would be conducted outside the mosque until further notice. The Emir, visibly shaken, expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased and the broader congregation affected by this tragedy.

 

At the same time, the Emir demonstrated strong leadership by promptly issuing a directive regarding the funeral arrangements for the victims. He announced that the funeral prayer for all the departed would be held at his palace, bringing together the community to mourn and pay their respects. The somber event was scheduled to take place at 8.30pm, providing a solemn space for friends, family, and fellow worshippers to come together in remembrance.

The Emir further disclosed that a crack had been noticed in the mosque’s wall the day prior, indicating a potential issue with the structural integrity of the building. Plans were already in motion to deploy a team of civil engineers to assess and repair the damage before the unforeseen tragedy unfolded.

 

As the community grapples with the loss and works to come to terms with the events of that fateful evening, the Emir’s decision to hold prayers outside the mosque temporarily underscores the priority placed on the safety and well-being of the worshippers.
